The Nakasendo was an important in land route linking Edo (modern day Tokyo) and Kyoto during the Edo period (1603-1867). Ota-juku prospered as the fifty-first post town from Edo along the highway. “Ota-no-Watashi”, which is located next to Kiso Rivers and crosses rapids by boat, has been regarded as one of the three major difficulties on Nakasendo. Ota-juku is a place where people can heal the tiredness of travelers and recover physical and mental strength. As many people interacted, Nakasendo became a place for cultural exchange between East and West. Today’s Minokamo citizens may have inherited the talent and temperament from such predecessors. you will surely feel the atmosphere of those days by walking through the old streets.
